You see, we were recently married and planning to have our first child. We wanted to know what to expect, how to successfully grow our marriage even as we grew the size of our family. We knew there were secrets that would help us – in particular as African Americans and soon-to-be African American parents. So we searched.

   None of the magazines that provided the kind of information we were looking for had anyone of color on their cover! Not even one of those magazines thought that Black Americans were important enough to feature anywhere in the magazine! It was so obvious that no magazine then in existence valued the Black family, Black male-female relationships, children, etc. (Oh sure, there were a couple of the old time African American magazines on the shelves…but those old standbys did not, and still do not, have the kind of information that would help us grow closer as a couple, have and raise wonderful & happy kids, strengthen our family, and increase the love we feel for each other and for others.)

   Worse yet, there were no pictures of African Americans anywhere in any of the 34 major magazines I looked through. I couldn’t believe it!

   And make no mistake about it --- life is different for Black men, women, children, parents…when compared to life as experienced by others.

Many people – even some good friends – told me NOT to start a magazine…
   Some even asked me what made me think that Black people would be interested in a magazine designed to strengthen relationships, improve health, enhance the development of children…

I believed in Black Americans
   But, I didn’t listen to the negative advice. And, I refused to take counsel with my fears. My ancestors worked too hard and too long and for too little --- for me to shy away from the challenge. Plus, I believed in Black Americans. And, I believed in what a magazine such as the one I envisioned could do!

Being ignored doesn’t feel good
   I have always said that the worst thing you can do to a people is to treat them as if they don’t exist…to ignore them. That means that you don’t even think enough of them to think of them!

   Black Americans are such an integral part of American life. We set the trends. We change the games. We innovate. We persevere.

   Yet we, and our families, were being ignored by every magazine, TV network… UNTIL that moment, in that bookstore 13 years ago. It was at that moment that I said that I was going to start a magazine – the only magazine --- that would dedicate itself to providing the information, tips & strategies that would allow African Americans to create and sustain Smarter, Healthier, Happier Families. That magazine, that I named Family Digest, is now nearly 12 years old and has grown to become Black America’s Number 1 Family & Relationship Magazine.
