Family Digest Magazine is a magazine for Black Moms and Dads; helping them get more out of their
roles as wife, mother, father, husband, home-manager - with special emphasis
on areas of interest to Black Americans.
Editorial coverage includes parenting, health, love
& marriage, family finances, recipes, and beauty
& style,... all designed to appeal to our target reader. Most of our readers are married
with kids.
Please note:
Articles published in Family Digest are positive in
nature and focus on providing information and solutions,
not just analysis. The articles are conversational,
factual and authoritative. When the reader reads Family
Digest it is as if she/he is having a discussion with a
friend who is an expert in a particular field.
Important:
We love it when you can deliver photos appropriate for
the article.
Family Digest's Interest Areas include:
1. Family:
Articles in this section help parents help their children
in a variety of areas, such as: how to effectively discipline
their child, how to talk to kids about drugs, how to
build their kids' self-esteem, etc.
2. Family Travel:
This is a section that we're really excited about. The
key to this section is affordable, interesting vacation
destinations for the family. This could be: cruises
in the Caribbean, auto travel to destinations in the
U.S., Club Med, Skiing, Hawaii, trips out West, air/land
packages, etc. We want the trips to be accessible.
3. Auto Review:
We're interested in this piece that reviews various family vehicles... This piece should
always be written from the standpoint of what a Mom with kids would like in a family vehicle.
4. Enjoy Life!:
This section focuses on articles that strengthen moms
so that they can be better people. Articles in this
section are uplifting and leave the reader feeling they
can do anything. Example topics include: how to get
negative people out of your life, job strategies, networking
tips.
5. Love & Marriage:
The articles that appear in this section allow readers
to strengthen their relationship with their spouse.
Features in this section focus on: improving communication
between partners, tips on how to have a strong relationship,
and pleasing your partner (these articles can include
information on healthy sexual relations).
6. Health:
The focus here is on health and medical issues of particular
interest to Black women and men. Topics include breast cancer,
fibroids, high blood pressure, prostate cancer, diabetes, sickle-cell, cystitis, etc... These
articles should offer factual information regarding
available treatments and resources.
7. Family Finances: These are tips regarding saving
money and investing. Articles should provide immediately
usable information and how-tos. Examples include how
to save on groceries, how to choose life insurance,
how to develop an investment strategy, saving for the
kids' college, ...
8. Beauty & Style: This section provides information
on the latest in hair and skin care, as well as relevant
fashion trends. Examples might be: best skin care products
for busy moms, how to effectively moisturize African-American
skin, taking care of particular hair styles, the age
at which it is safe to do certain things to children's
hair (for instance, at what age is it safe to perm a
child's hair), ...
9. Meal Time!:
This section features recipes and information on food.
Articles should feature foods that are easily found
in a typical grocery store. Also, meals should be relatively
easy to prepare in 30 minutes or less.
Submission Guidelines:
1. Please submit story ideas, and your thoughts on
the angle you'd like to take to editor@familydigest.com.
Ideas will be judged according to their fit with the
information outlined above.
2. If you have not written for us before, please submit
3 writing samples that are representative of your work.
These should also be sent to editor@familydigest.com. Please send samples in the body of the email, we will not open attachments.
3. Length: Generally, articles should be 1,000 to 1,500
words.
4. Article Approach: We encourage a mix of approaches
including narratives, profiles, how- tos and Q&As.
Please indicate the direction you would like to take
along with each story idea (see #1 above).
5. Deadlines: Inquire
6. Completed story submission: All work must be submitted
by EMail to editor@familydigest.com
(unless other arrangements are agreed to).
7. Rewrites: If retooling is necessary, we will contact
you within 3 weeks of article submission to discuss.
8. Send photos to: Jennifer Teller at the address below.
Include your name and story title with all photos.
9. We pay upon publication of the issue. Writing fees vary based
on budget and need. We will contact you with rate at
time of initial contact.
